Description

Reporting to the Extrusion Team Leader, the Process Engineer II will lead development and/or manufacturing trials and access opportunities and manage resources to enable upgrades to the Peak Nano Extrusion lines. This includes managing capital improvements, operation, and troubleshooting of multilayer cast film co-extrusion system designed to produce capacitor, optical, or speciality layered film products. Peak Nano is focused on developing and delivering innovative, disruptive solutions to the nanolayer film market. Located in Valley View, OH, the Process Engineer II will work closely with all functions to ensure high quality, efficient material development and sample production of nanolayered capacitor, optical, and packaging film.

Responsibilities include upgrade, maintenance, and commissioning of coextrusion line designed for thin multilayer film. Additionally, the individual will conduct process research programs in conjunction with Peak development teams to identify formulations for new commercial opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, commission, and lead operation of nanolayer coextrusion line

  • Initiate process development for multilayer film applications

  • Lead new developmental film product evaluation efforts

  • Research, develop and implement technical solutions through hands-on experimentation / problem-solving of film extrusion

  • Develop and implement maintenance plans

  • Resolve film quality concerns on customer programs

  • Recommend / develop upgrades to formulation, technology, and process

  • Support scale-up and commercialization of new technologies by working seamlessly with other groups, business partners, and customers

  • Push boundaries on the formulation and process to develop an understanding of the relationship between process and product performance.

  • Lead continuous improvement programs

  • Consistently apply the Scientific Method in the planning and execution of experimental plans

  • Direct extrusion technicians on daily line operations

  • Formulate hypotheses and develop experimental plans to test hypotheses.

  • Demonstrate the appropriate use of statistical tools to solve complex problems.

  • Use skills and competencies to increase productivity of self and others.

  • Serve on multi-disciplinary project teams to collaborate, provide technical input, and deliver results aligned with team deliverables.

  • Understand and implement appropriate EH&S standards, policies, and procedures applicable to the operation of an extrusion line. Lead by example for safe behaviors by promoting safe work habits.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2+ years of hands-on experience preferably in the plastics industry or academia with cast extrusion of thermoplastic polymer films.

  • Experience with polymer compounding and formulation research and development

  • A track record of developing quality plastic products

  • Ability to work independently and drive projects to completion.

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

  • Ability to partner with team members and stakeholders from multiple backgrounds

  • Passionate about plastic formulation development and conversion processes including extrusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Successful research and development of thermoplastic compounds or films.

  • Hands-on operation of plastic conversion equipment such as: Cast film, blown film or sheet extrusion and/or co-extrusion.

  • Processing experience across a wide range of polymer materials

  • Experience in development or production of consumer packaging products

  • Understanding of polymer chemistry and rheology

  • New product scale-up and commercialization experience

  • Experience working in a cross-functional team environment

  • Design of Experiments knowledge

Education

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plastic Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering
