What You’ll Do

Develop next generation optical systems incorporating Peak Nano’s proprietary nano-layered gradient index of refraction (LGRIN) optical elements. Work as part of an agile optical design team reporting directly to the VP of Optical Engineering on customer driven as well as IRAD optical design projects from ideation, design, prototype, and ultimately full-scale production. You will work closely with our partners spanning a wide range of markets (e.g. medical, automation, entertainment) to develop revolutionary imaging and non-imaging optical systems. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Translating client needs to optical design specifications for a wide variety of applications

  • Primary optical designer or working as part of an optical design team to deliver complete optical design solutions on time and on budget

  • Interface with Peak Nano’s internal LGRIN manufacturing team as well as external optical fabrication houses to deliver elements and systems that perform within optical design specifications

  • Develop technical design documentations for internal and external review including standard engineering design procedures including preliminary design and critical design reviews

What You Have

  • BS/MS in Physics, Optics or Electrical Engineering + 5 years of direct optical design experience

  • Proficient with OpticStudio for the design and tolerancing of optical systems

  • Proficient with MATLAB

  • Familiarity with developing element and system fabrication drawings/schematics

  • Familiarity with optical metrology as applied to the determination of base material optical properties through system testing

  • Familiarity with defining optical material and element quality industrial standards

  • Possession of excellent written and oral communication skills

You Should Also Have

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Optics or Electrical Engineering + (direct thesis work in optical design or 3 years of direct optical design experience)

  • Advanced user of OpticStudio including direct experience with writing ZOS-APIs and ZPLs

  • Proficient in programming languages such as C++ and Python (in addition to MATLAB)

  • Experience directly designing and/or working closely with mechanical engineers to develop the system optomechanics using commercial software such as LensMechanix

  • Proficient in using and maintaining optical metrology equipment as applied to determination of base material optical properties through system testing

  • Proficient with using equipment and tools to quantify and certify optical materials and elements to industry standards
